NDT en Complicité presenteren een nieuw avondvullend werk van Crystal Pite en Simon McBurney. We leven in een tijdperk van uitsterving. Zullen we ooit in staat zijn om te benoemen wat we kwijtraken? Wat betekent het om getuige te zijn van een geweld waarvan we zowel dader als slachtoffer zijn?

Associate choreograaf Crystal Pite en Artistiek directeur van Complicité Simon McBurney, ieder op een ander continent, wisselden ideeën uit over zowel hun angsten als hun voorzichtige hoop voor onze tijd. Hun proces is gebaseerd op een rijke en verrassende verzameling van bronnen: van het geluid van smeltende ijskappen tot de luide protesten van klimaatontkenners, van neurowetenschapscolleges over het brein tot het kakofonische gekakel van Instagram influencers.

Over een periode van vier jaar hebben de twee wereldberoemde kunstenaars samen drie werken voor NDT 1 gecreëerd, elk ontwikkeld in reactie op het vorige. Figures in Extinction [1.0] confronteert ons met alles dat stervende is op onze planeet, terwijl [2.0] een indringend onderzoek is naar onze behoefte aan verbinding in een verdeelde wereld. Het derde en laatste werk zet deze interdisciplinaire uitwisseling voort, met een wereldpremière in het Verenigd Koninkrijk tijdens het Manchester International Festival in februari 2025. Dit werk biedt een sprankje licht in de duisternis voor waar we – gezamenlijk, spiritueel en vol van verbeelding – mogelijk naartoe gaan.

NDT and Complicité present a new full-length work by Crystal Pite and Simon McBurney

We are living in an age of extinction. Can we ever hope to give a name to what we are losing? What does it mean to bear witness to a violence in which we are both perpetrator and victim? 

Across continents, associate choreographer Crystal Pite and Complicité Artistic Director Simon McBurney have ex­changed ideas reflecting on their fears and cautious hopes for our age. Their process has drawn on a rich and surpri­sing array of source materials: from the sound of ice caps melting to the clarion calls of climate change deniers, from scholastic lectures on the neuroscience of the brain to the cacophonous clatter of Instagram influencers. 

Over a span of four years, the two world-renowned artists have created three works together for NDT 1, each developed in response to the last. Figures in Extinction [1.0] confronts us with everything that is dying on our planet, while [2.0] is a searing examination of our need for connection in a separated world. The third and final work will continue this cross-disciplinary exchange, making its world premiere in the UK during Manchester International Festival in February 2025. The work will offer a spark in the darkness as to where we – collectively, spiritually, and imaginatively – might go next.
