Queer puppet show inspired by bunraku theater
With a vibrant, queer puppet show inspired by Japanese bunraku theater, playwright and director Satoko Ichihara reimagines the ancient legend of the Blind Weakling (Shuntokumaru) in the present day. While in the original version children are abandoned, sick people are discriminated against, and everyone is eventually redeemed, Ichihara's thinking goes much further than this tragic tale and the mere dichotomy between good and evil. A cast of sex dolls, mannequins, and other creatures embody people, their fate, desires, and violence. Actress Sachiko Hara leads us as a narrator (gidayu) through the story. Experimental musician Kakushin Nishihara combines the traditional sound of the satsuma-biwa with noise and electronic music into an extraordinary soundtrack for the piece.
