A performance about desire, the craving for an all-consuming unification in which you are equally left heartbroken.
Desire is the driving force in Charles Pas' visual dance performance Person Longing For Human. Three performers pursue lust in all its various forms. Dreaming of complete fusion and self-preservation, they explore the richness of love.
In a vigorous choreography, the body is continuously possessed by Eros. A quest where both pain and happiness are felt simultaneously.
The battlefield of Person Longing for Human finds a plea for the unarmored
approach to tempestuous love and life. Why go into a battle when you know in advance that you will be left broken?
” A spectacle as fascinating as it is moving, whose every turn surprises. In the act you recognize doubtful infatuation, then lust, a lovemaking, but also loneliness. You see that fierce physicality, which can be peculiar to mimes (Pas did the mime training), with bodies as the source of action and movements that seem electrically charged. Thus the performers collide again and again in a chilling tour de force.” - ★★★★★ NRC
“'A sweetly strong piece of work with which Charles Pas both stupefies and intoxicates. Tastes like more and mead.” - Critic's Choice - Theaterkrant
ABOUT
Charles Pas (Antwerp, 1998) is a director/maker, alumnus of the Mime Academy (2020, Academie voor Theater en Dans), based in Brussels and Amsterdam, with Flemish schwung and international ambition and potential. In 2020, Charles received the 3 Package Deal from the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts, a stipend for young talent. In 2022, he founded Studio FCP in the centre of Amsterdam, an accessible space for established and young makers. In 2024, he won the PrixFintroPrijs, an award for emerging talent in Belgium.
His work immediately stands out. He combines a burning determination with a greedy eagerness to learn; he literally and figuratively throws himself on stage, has no regard for genre and thus moves seamlessly between all disciplines. Through visceral movement, rhythmic choreography, immersive soundscapes and images, the viewer is transported into raw worlds full of emotion. Above all, Charles aims directly at the heart, with an urgency and precarity that is immediately sensable in the audience. Charles is looking for the authentic human and does not deny any side of humanity, in all its dualities: utopia and dystopia, chaos and control, victim and aggressor, interconnectedness and rootlessness; It is these duplicity he pursues to undo.
Charles: ‘I think people can be horrifying. I hope that we - by seeing how bad everything can get - are able to actively decide to do the right thing. By depicting what I repent, I want to encourage hope. Deep down, I have a fear of never finding true communion with my peers or of losing someone I love because of my own mistakes. Making performances is my ultimate pursuit to make these human struggles palpable and dissect our fears.’
