What unites us and what separates us? And how does the distance between the two affect our relationships? In echo_re_echo choreographer Ann Van den Broek and singer Gregory Frateur explore the attraction and distance between their personal and artistic identity to allow it to resonate with power and vulnerability. Together they take to the stage, along with musician Nicolas Rombouts and two dancers/performers.
echo_re_echo focuses on the resonance between their reality, mystery, and fantasy. Their echoes create a field of tension in which intense human emotions, frustrations, desires, and expectations are portrayed. Reflecting on the transformative times we live in, where fluidity, identity, and physical reality struggle for acceptance.
echo_re_echo takes place on the edge between concert and dance piece, from grand gestures to silence and intimacy, with images both monumental as well as personal.
About the creators
Gregory Frateur
Gregory Frateur (BE) is well-known for his work in the Belgian band Dez Mona. The band initially played alternative music inspired by jazz, gospel, and spirituals, but through the years its music evolved into unconventional contemporary pop. A striking feature is Frateur’s exceptional voice. Gregory Frateur and Ann Van den Broek have been working together for years. Together with Dez Mona he composed the music for The Red Piece (2013), and in The Black Piece (2014) Gregory Frateur did voice work and he also appeared on screen. In Accusations (2017) Frateur appeared live on stage for the first time as a performer. To this day, Frateur is regularly involved in Ann Van den Broek’s productions as a singer, performer, or rehearsal director.
Ann Van den Broek
Since the year 2000, and after an active and successful career as a dancer, Ann Van den Broek has focused exclusively on developing her work as a choreographer. She has also been working on expanding her characteristic dance/movement language and idiom. The Flemish choreographer creates unique and penetrating productions inspired by our human existence and crosses the lines between the various art disciplines, embraces the unorthodox, and strives to have a critical, direct, and intense dialogue with her audiences.
