Art is not only visible in our halls but also outside, on the steps, in the lobby, and on the square; art is everywhere here. As an interdisciplinary house, we not only provide space for performing arts but also bring various disciplines together in our lobby for encounters between worlds and works.
About TRaces
During the free expo program TRaces, we invite Rotterdam artists, from emerging to established, to use our building as a stage for ongoing exhibitions of interdisciplinary work that connect with the city of Rotterdam and its residents. The lobby is the exhibition space where these invited Rotterdam artists leave their mark. Is there a performance in the main hall? Then you can always drop by during the exhibition period, before the performance starts, during, and shortly after it ends. From November 24th and onwards we welcome Merijn Haenen.
About the artist
Merijn Haenen (1989) is an intuitive creator. He is interested in making different materials rhyme with each other in unexpected ways, which results in new visual discoveries and ideas. This leads to confrontational, yet playful, collage-like works that evoke a sense of recognition without being anything specific.
For Theater Rotterdam, he created a light installation using returned and rejected neon tubes, combined with ratchet straps. The glass tubes already have a fixed form and color, and he uses them to build new works—both temporary and permanent—for exhibition spaces and on commission. These site-specific works respond to the space in which they are placed. They tension the vast concrete foyer and shoot through the room like a movement. Additionally, the glow of the lights distorts and reflects as it strikes each surface.
Grand Opening
This edition of TRaces will have its grand opening Sunday afternoon November 24th at 13:30 in the erkerfoyer of TR25 Schouwburg.
