Language: no broblem moves between languages, geographies, voices, and imaginations, offering an exploration of multilingualism. When speaking more than one language becomes a navigational compass, we are drawn into the underlying power dynamics at play between those languages. How do they intertwine in one’s mind in an environment of oppression? How can their embodiment shape our understanding of borders and displacement?
We follow the reflective yet peculiar story of a train journey in Belgium, where the protagonist has intriguing encounters. Her personal story is interwoven with that of her family members living under occupation. Their voices recount how they relate to Palestinian Arabic, their native spoken language, in contrast to Hebrew, the official state language of their residence. It offers a space to reflect on one of the often-overlooked strategies of colonialism: the active yet subtle mechanisms that, over generations, gradually enable the colonizer's language to dominate over the language of the indigenous people.
Marah Haj Hussein unveils the layered forms of pressure, violence, and domination that one language can exert on another, constantly transforming and reshaping it. The theater becomes a stage where confusing, intersecting, and antagonistic realities collide. Through humor, anger, love, and absurdity, the performance especially embraces the limits of translatability, continuing to question processes of resistance.
“Marah Haj Hussein delivers a brilliant demonstration of language as a weapon of oppression.” - Theaterkrant
“Haj Hussein approaches language as a living organism with an abundance of (socio-political) functions. It is simultaneously a form of cultural heritage, a tool of oppression, a way to connect, and a means of excluding the Other.” - e-tcetera
Marah Haj Hussein
Marah Haj Hussein (°1998) is a dancer, actress, and creator from Kofor Yassif in occupied Palestine. She currently resides in Antwerp, where she graduated in 2021 with a Bachelor’s degree in Dance from the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp. In June 2023, she completed her Master’s degree in Drama at KASK in Ghent. By merging these two disciplines, Marah challenges the boundaries that separate text from movement while exploring ways to integrate both into the performative space.
In her work, Marah investigates the concept and definition of a mother tongue, examining the power dynamics between languages. Marah won the Roel Verniers Prize at Het Theaterfestival 2023 and was selected for Het Theaterfestival 2024.
