Over de film
Deze film is een poëtisch en muzikaal eerbetoon aan degenen die de nasleep van hongersnood en migratie hebben moeten doorstaan, en aan Palestijnse hongerstakers wiens verzet de oorverdovende stilte van de koloniale wereld overleeft.
De filmmaker
Diana Al-Halabi (1990, Libanon) is een in Rotterdam gevestigde kunstenaar, die Beeldende Kunst studeerde aan het Piet Zwart Instituut in Rotterdam en deelnam aan het Homework Space Program van Ashkal Alwan in Beiroet. Ze volgt een interdisciplinaire praktijk, met een focus op bewegend beeld, tekst, performance en schilderkunst. Het artistieke werk van Al-Halabi is een voortdurende protest tegen hiërarchische en patriarchale systemen van onderdrukking. Haar werken proberen vaak de grondslagen te verschuiven en de onderdrukker kleiner te maken door middel van visuele taal. Door een intersectionele feministische lens benadert Al-Halabi haar praktijk vanuit het persoonlijke naar het politieke en behandelt zij onderwerpen zoals patriarchale cognitieve antropometrie, institutioneel geweld, verlammende bureaucratie, kolonialisme van kolonisten en het visumregime. The Battle of Empty Stomachs (2024) won de IFFR RTM Pitch Award en werd officieel geselecteerd voor het IFFR 2024.

Op vrijdag 10 januari om 19.00 uur is er voorafgaand aan de film een gesprek met regisseur Diana Al-Halabi en moderator Amira Gad.
Een bezoek aan deze film is op alle dagen goed te combineren met de voorstellingen Vlaemsch (chez moi) van Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui/Eastman in de grote zaal en Alles moet weg van Studio Dries verhoeven in de kleine zaal.

The Battle of Empty Stomachs researches harrowing hunger strikes undertaken by Palestinian prisoners. It is a reminder of the lengths to which Palestinians must go to fight for their basic human rights. This film is a poetic and musical tribute to those who suffered the aftermath of famine and migration, and to Palestinian hunger strikers whose resistance outlives the deafening silence of the colonial world.
The Filmmaker
Diana Al-Halabi(1990, Lebanon) is a Rotterdam-based artist, who studied Fine Arts at the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam and took part in Ashkal Alwan’s Homework Space Program in Beirut. She pursues an interdisciplinary practice, with a focus on moving image, text, performance and painting. Al-Halabi’s artistic practice is a continuous protest against hierarchical and patriarchal systems of oppression. Her works often seek to shift grounds and scale down the oppressor through visual language. Through an intersectional feminist lens, Al Halabi’s practice departs from the personal to the political and tackles notions such as patriarchal cognitive anthropometry, institutional violence, disabling bureaucracy, settler colonialism and the visa regime. The Battle of Empty Stomachs (2024) won the IFFR RTM Pitch Award and is officially selected for IFFR 2024.
