Over TRaces
Tijdens het gratis expo-programma TRaces nodigen we Rotterdamse kunstenaars, van opkomend tot gevestigd, uit om ons gebouw te gebruiken als podium voor doorlopende tentoonstellingen van interdisciplinair werk dat verbinding maakt met de stad Rotterdam en haar inwoners. De hal is de tentoonstellingsruimte waar deze uitgenodigde Rotterdamse kunstenaars hun sporen achterlaten. Is er een voorstelling in de grote zaal? Dan kun je voor aanvang, tijdens en kort na afloop van de voorstelling altijd binnenlopen tijdens de expo-periode. Vanaf 15 januari verwelkomen we Sunhyo Mast
Over de kunstenaar
Sunhyo Mast is een multidisciplinaire kunstenaar, ontwerper en curator gevestigd in Rotterdam. Geïntrigeerd door het vervreemde en anderewereldse, zijn zijn meubels eerder gesculptureerd dan ontworpen. Sunhyo benadert elk nieuw project als een complete amateur en laat intuïtie zijn proces leiden, waarbij hij de toevalligheden onderweg omarmt. Zijn keuze voor materialen komt voort uit overvloed: hergebruikt hout, bakstenen, schrootaluminium en stukken betonpuin liggen verspreid over de vloer van zijn atelier. Uit deze steeds groeiende voorraad kiest hij de ideale materialen voor zijn volgende projecten.
Naast zijn sculpturale werk legt Sunhyo veel nadruk op het bevorderen van menselijke connecties en gezamenlijke creatieve processen. Deze inzet voor collectieve actie komt tot uiting in zijn curatorenprojecten, waar hij tentoonstellingen organiseert die diverse stemmen en perspectieven betrekken.
Over de expositie
In All Homes Require a Key, reflecteert Sunhyo Mast op de vluchtige en fragiele aard van “thuis.” De werken in deze tentoonstelling zijn gevormd door de ervaringen van de kunstenaar van verplaatsing tijdens een turbulente jeugd, toen zijn gezin op zoek was naar emotionele veiligheid en ontsnapping aan het onderdrukkende gewicht van een dominante aanwezigheid.
De collectie volgt een voortgang door deze geleefde ervaringen, van momenten van instabiliteit en onderdrukking tot momenten van veerkracht en transformatie. Elk werk weerspiegelt een andere fase in het navigeren door de turbulentie van verplaatsing, waarbij niet alleen de onzekerheid, maar ook de stille kracht die onderweg werd gevonden, wordt vastgelegd.
Door deze reeks werken nodigt Sunhyo Mast de toeschouwer uit om na te denken over de evoluerende aard van thuis—niet alleen als een fysieke plek, maar als een emotionele reis. Door persoonlijke herinneringen om te zetten in symbolische vormen, opent de tentoonstelling een dialoog over veerkracht, transformatie en de universele wens naar een veilige haven.
Het werk van Sunhyo Mast is te zien tot en met 18 februari 2025 in de erker van TR25 Schouwburg.

As an interdisciplinary house, we not only provide space for performing arts but also bring various disciplines together in our lobby for encounters between worlds and works.
About TRaces
During the free expo program TRaces, we invite Rotterdam artists, from emerging to established, to use our building as a stage for ongoing exhibitions of interdisciplinary work that connect with the city of Rotterdam and its residents. The lobby is the exhibition space where these invited Rotterdam artists leave their mark. Is there a performance in the main hall? Then you can always drop by during the exhibition period, before the performance starts, during, and shortly after it ends. From January 15th and onwards we welcome Sunhyo Mast.
About the artist
Sunhyo Mast is an multidisciplinary artist, designer and curator based in Rotterdam. Fascinated with the alienated and otherworldly, his furniture pieces are sculpted rather than designed. Sunhyo approaches every new project as a complete amateur, and lets intuition guide his process, embracing the slippages along the way. His choice of materials stems from abundance: reclaimed wood, bricks, scrap aluminium, and chunks of concrete rubble are scattered across his studio floor. From this ever-growing inventory, he selects the ideal materials for his next projects.
Alongside his sculptural work, Sunhyo places a strong emphasis on fostering human connections and collaborative creative processes. This commitment to collective action is expressed through his curatorial projects, where he organises exhibitions that engage diverse voices and perspectives.
About the exposition
In All Homes Require a Key, Sunhyo Mast reflects on the fleeting and fragile nature of “home.” The works in this exhibition are shaped by the artist’s experiences of displacement during a turbulent childhood, as his family moved in search of emotional safety and escape from the oppressive weight of a domineering presence.
The collection charts a progression through these lived experiences, from moments of instability and oppression to instances of resilience and transformation. Each piece reflects a different stage of navigating the turbulence of displacement, capturing not only the uncertainty but also the quiet strength found along the way.
Through this body of work, Sunhyo Mast invites viewers to reflect on the evolving nature of home—not just as a physical place, but as an emotional journey. By transforming personal memories into symbolic forms, the exhibition opens a dialogue on resilience, transformation, and the universal desire for a safe haven.
The work of Sunhyo Mast can be visited until Feburary 18th 2025 in the erker of TR25 Schouwburg.
