About TRaces
During the free expo program TRaces, we invite Rotterdam artists, from emerging to established, to use our building as a stage for ongoing exhibitions of interdisciplinary work that connect with the city of Rotterdam and its residents. The lobby is the exhibition space where these invited Rotterdam artists leave their mark! Is Theater Rotterdam open? Then you can always drop in during the expo period. From February 19th until April 13th we welcome the artist Geert Mul.
About the artist
For over 25 years, Geert Mul (1965) has explored the possibilities of visual poetry within the language of new media. His oeuvre spans a broad spectrum of experimental artworks, including prints, light objects, video, and interactive/generative computer installations. These works have been exhibited in museums, festivals and public spaces. The interplay between technology and perception serves as a leitmotif in Mul’s work.
Mul studied at the Arnhem Academy of Art (HKA) from 1985 to 1990, where he graduated with a focus on computer animation, video, and kinetic sculptures. After his studies, he traveled and spent a year living in Tokyo. Japan became a lasting source of inspiration, offering a radically alternative perspective on the world.
Mul’s career began in 1993, with experimental video installations in which he combined sound, visual sampling, original camera work and live performance. Using the name Cut-Up, he gained recognition in the techno scene as one of the pioneering VJs.
From 2000 onwards, he began working with ‘digital found footage’ from databases, exploring the potential of the database as a creative medium. His work evolved into generative and interactive installations, often with a philosophical undertone, and was exhibited internationally, earning him several awards.
The COVID-19 pandemic (2020) marked a new phase in Mul’s work, where he began using his own photography to explore the relationship between nature and technology. He has been experimenting with lightboxes and monumental works featuring nature images, investigating to what extent artificial intelligence trained with his own photography can convey subjective, time-bound experiences. He describes this approach as "generative impressionism."
Mul has exhibited at institutions including Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Kröller-Müller Museum, The National Museum of Modern Art Kyoto, Museo Nacional Reina Sofía in Madrid, Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno (IVAM), and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. Additionally, he has realized over twenty public art installations and has won awards in The Netherlands and abroad.
