An ode to the body
In the new production ANTIBODIES, performance duo Boogaerdt/VanderSchoot honors feminine anatomy as the source of creation during a ritual gathering. In a technologically mediated séance, we encounter a woman moving in a closed capsule between reality, fiction, dream and hallucination. On the basis of her online data, she descends into twilight zones where she meets variants of herself.
The theme of ANTIBODIES is more relevant than ever. In recent decades, and especially in the last six months, we have increasingly moved into the online landscape. This virtual space is regulated by machines with artificial intelligence, which use human interaction to improve themselves. Man is inseparable from the machine he made with his own hands. In fact, we are so intertwined with our technology that we can no longer say whether the man makes the machine or the machine makes the man. This far-reaching technology creates a reality in which our choices are predictable and our actions are automated. Performance duo Boogaerdt/VanderSchoot investigates the role of the human body in this frictionless world of data. They approach this sweating, shitting, and bleeding body that we move through our lives as the ultimate means of de-automating ourselves and recreating our own reality.
Boogaerdt/VanderSchoot about the inspiration for ANTIBODIES: “We are fascinated by the tension between the frictionless domain of data and the friction that is inherent in the physical domain. "Dataism" is based on a future that is predictable, in which everything is countable, measurable and traceable. We are investigating a movement that goes against this; the groping movement through unknown twilight zones and into the uncanny depths of the female body. We move between dream and reality, between consciousness and subconscious, between our online profile and our offline body. Because we suspect that somewhere there we can find the source from which we can (re)create our lives and find our freedom. ”
ANTIBODIES is, just as Headroom and Botanical Wasteland, part of the Future Fossils series, a tentacular art project about digital creatures in a "non-human" era. Based on the idea that humanism is bankrupt, Boogaerdt/VanderSchoot investigates how the so-called post-humanism could suit us better. How can we grow towards a new version of humanity in which we also involve non-human life forms? The series questions what it means to make art in 'the non-human era', an era in which mankind is no longer the measure of things. From the central question: "If man is not the central object, then what is humanity?" Boogaerdt/VanderSchoot searches for the relevance of the theater in a new era.
BIOGRAPHY BOOGAERDT/VANDERSCHOOT
Suzan Boogaerdt and Bianca van der Schoot have been working together ever since they graduated together from the Mime Department of the Amsterdam Theatre School in 1999. In 2016 Boogaerdt/VanderSchoot became key artistic associates of Theater Rotterdam, and since then they have been working in both Rotterdam and Berlin, where they co-create with Susanne Kennedy at the Volksbühne.
Boogaerdt/VanderSchoot creates expressive, physical, bold and highly visual theatrical installations which revolve around the struggles and challenges people face in today’s media-driven world. They look for the relevance of theatre in the 21th century, and focus on the development of new theatrical shapes and idioms that give space and meaning to our post humanity, and to the flexible and multiple identities that arise from it.
Since 2011 they have been working on a series of 'Visual Statements': theatrical representations of ‘la societé du spectacle’ and the role of image culture in our lives. Ours is a universe of representation, in which what is real actually slowly dies. With their Visual Statements-series, Boogaerdt/VanderSchoot is creating ground-breaking and troubling theatre of a special status in Dutch theatre. This series contains five performances: BIMBO, Small World, Spectacular performance, Hideous (wo)men (a co-operation with director Susanne Kennedy) and The Immortals. At the Venice Biennale 2017, they presented a selection of the series.
The artistic ongoing conversation with Susanne Kennedy was followed up after Hideous (wo)men by a radical adaptation of the Orpheus-legend, ORFEO, at the Ruhr Triennale in 2015, and in collaboration with Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop. They also made three productions together for the Volksbühne in Berlin: Women in Trouble (2017), Coming Society (2019), and Ultraworld (2020).
Starting in 2016, Boogaerdt/VanderSchoot made Freddie (2017), Headroom (in 2018, in collaboration with Erik Whien), and Botanical Wasteland (2019) for Theater Rotterdam. Headroom is the first part of the Future Fossils series; Botanical Wasteland is its sequel, and a co-creation with Touki Delphine. That same year, they also performed at Oerol the tryptich The Infectious Event, consisting of the performances Botanical Wasteland, Walk of Things and Firebird. The following tour of Botanical Wasteland in 2020, was sold out nationwide.
ANTIBODIES is a production of Theater Rotterdam and is a part of ACT, a European cooperation project on ecology, climate change and social transition. In an era of climate breakdown, mass extinction and growing inequalities, we join our forces in a project on hope: connecting broad perspectives with specific, localised possibilities, ones that invite or demand that we ACT.
