A research into the space of womanhood and how to transcend it
Together with a guest she has just met, Khadija El Kharraz Alami each time creates a brand new performance
For every performance of Re-claiming Space, Khadija El Kharraz Alami invites a new guest onto the stage. This may be a performer, an artist, an actor, a writer, a human being, a dancer…. The audience is witness to their first encounter. Re-claiming Space is an investigation of the female space and how to transcend it.
For this edition of Re-claiming Space, Khadija has invited Brazilian theater maker Rodrigo Batista. Rodrigo ran an esteemed theater company in São Paolo for years before coming to the Netherlands. In his work he investigates how political statements can be staged and what kind of artistic attitude can trigger a real uprising. His activism extends beyond the theater walls, a year ago he responded with a bilingual manifesto (to liberate theater practices from, among other things, discriminatory class thinking) to two reviews about the performance De Meiden van Dood Paard, in which he played the role of Madame.
During the performance Khadija El Kharraz Alami examines female beauty, vulnerability, unheard voices, the physical, and neglected female perspectives; “re-claiming space by sharing space”. Her research is inspired by among others Women Who Run With the Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estés and Audre Lorde’s Your silence will not protect you. In her practice El Kharraz Alami doesn’t want to determine everything beforehand, but rather lets the performance come into being in the moment itself.

About Khadija El Kharraz Alami
Already during her study at the Utrecht School of the Arts, Khadija El Kharraz Alami’s performances stood out. She was lauded by the press for her powerful performative style and her overwhelming stage personality. In 2018 her performance Nu ben ik Medea won her both the KBC Jongtheaterprijs and the audience award at the Theater aan Zee festival in Oostende. In 2022 this solo will be reprised with performances in the Netherlands, Belgium and Sweden.
In 2021 Khadija works towards her new performative research performance Re-claiming Space. As a final residence Productiehuis Theater Rotterdam (TR) offered her a month of research space during TRipp [space], which includes among others the exchange program PerformLab in Istanbul. Afterwards Productiehuis TR will support Khadija’s new production The Waves, which premiers in 2022.
‘El Kharraz Alami alternates the improvised parts of her performance with poetic passages in Dutch that reveal her verbal talent, sensitivity and acumen.’ Etcetera about Re-claiming Space
El Kharraz Alami wisselt de geïmproviseerde delen van de voorstelling af met Nederlandstalige poëtische teksten die haar verbaal talent, gevoeligheid en scherpzinnigheid blootleggen.
