Trajal Harrell combines modern dance with voguing, bringing together not only styles but also audiences. When he was proclaimed dancer of the year, this prompted him to rethink his principles.
The last years American dancer and choreographer Trajal Harrell toured the world with performances in which he combines the modern dance of the white, artistic middle class with voguing, a style that is the domain of the African-American and Latino LGBTQ+ community.
In his solo Dancer of the Year, we see Harrell repeating gestures to store them in his body. Harrell shares his work with us in an intimate setting.
The American dancer and choreographer created the solo after hij was proclaimed Dancer of the Year 2018 by Tanz Magazine. This unexpected recognition prompted him to reflect on his status and identity as a dancer. What is the value of this title? What is the value of dance, of dance practice, and the knowledge it produces? How is history stored in dance and the body, and how is it transmitted? Harrell revisits his artistic family tree, and the choreographic strategies he developed over the years to express himself and his identity.
