We staan op vele keerpunten tegelijk. Wat doen we daarmee? 8: Metamorphosis is een uitnodiging voor een herwaardering van wat we hebben en dus waar we naartoe gaan.

Het ijs smelt, het klimaat verandert, machtsverhoudingen verschuiven, gender is niet langer vanzelfsprekend. Voor ons ligt een enorme onzekerheid. Acht dansers en zangers en jazzdrummer Frank Rosaly nemen je mee in een ritueel voor het einde van het patriarchaat. De mannen zitten gevangen in het ijzige ritme van Henry Purcells The cold song (“let me freeze again”) maar de hete adem van verandering hijgt in hun nek. Als in de tekeningen van M.C. Escher zien we de transformatie zich stap voor stap voltrekken. Soms bijna onmerkbaar, soms met een schok. 

Tegen de achtergrond van de klimaatcrisis is 8: Metamorphosis een uitnodiging om bestaande structuren opnieuw te bekijken. Is er een andere manier van manzijn mogelijk? Hoe gaan we de toekomst van de mensheid tegemoet? Regisseur en choreograaf Nicole Beutler laat alle bekende patronen langzaam maar zeker smelten totdat er ruimte ontstaat voor een nieuwe gedroomde toekomst.

De vormgeving van het stuk is bijzonder: podium, zaal, performers en publiek worden allemaal onderdeel van één theatraal landschap. 

Winnaar VSCD Mimeprijs 2020/2021
8: Metamorphosis won tijdens het Nederlands Theater Festival 2021 de VSCD Mimeprijs 2020/21. Ook kreeg de voorstelling een nominatie voor de Zwaan voor de meest indrukwekkende dansvoorstelling van 2019-2020.

Nicole Beutler
Regisseur en choreograaf Nicole Beutler maakt voorstellingen op het snijvlak van dans, (muziek)theater en beeldende kunst. Al twintig jaar een vernieuwende stem in het Nederlandse danslandschap. 
De komende jaren werkt Beutler aan een nieuwe trilogie over de klimaatcrisis: Rituals of transformation (towards a new humanity). Het eerste deel Ginkgo (or: 56 million years ago there were palm trees on the North Pole) gaat in 2022 in première. Het wordt een requiem voor de wereld zoals we die kennen.

We are at many turning points at once. How do we deal with that? 8: Metamorphosis is an invitation for a reappraisal of what we have and therefore of where we are going.

The ice is melting, the climate is changing, the balance of power is starting to shift. The future holds great uncertainty. Eight men – dancers, singers and a drummer – draw the audience into a ritual for a new era. Inspired by the mathematical transitions in the illusory art of M.C. Escher, familiar patterns transform into new possibilities. 8: Metamorphosis is both a dance performance and a contemporary opera about embracing the changes that lie ahead. Will they come in a gradual process or as a series of painful shocks? 

Against the background of the climate crisis, 8: Metamorphosis is an invitation to rethink existing structures. Is there another way of manhood possible? How do we face the future of humanity? Director and choreographer Nicole Beutler slowly but surely melts all known patterns until space is created for a new dreamed future.

The design of the piece is special: stage, hall, performers and audience all become part of one theatrical landscape.

Winner VSCD Mimeprijs 2020/2021
At the Nederlands Theater Festival 2021 8: Metamorphosis won the VSCD Mimeprijs 2020/2021. The theatre piece was also nominated for the Swan for the most impressive dance performance of 2019-2020.

Director and choreographer Nicole Beutler creates performances at the intersection of dance, (music) theater and visual arts. An innovative voice in the Dutch dance landscape for twenty years.
In the coming years, Beutler will be working on a new trilogy about the climate crisis: Rituals of transformation (towards a new humanity). The first part Ginkgo (or: 56 million years ago there were palm trees on the North Pole) will premiere in 2022. It will be a requiem for the world as we know it.
