Nastaran Razawi Khorasani
"How can I share my stage – both literally and figuratively – with people who have no access to it?"
The work of theatre maker and actress Nastaran Razawi Khorasani (1987, Iran) shows how people – even when they are in difficult circumstances – again and again find ways to shape their existence. She makes their voices heard in a visual and physical theatre language. These people would otherwise not have access to a stage.
Nastaran has a wide-ranging practice: she is making intimate solo performances, but also performs in larger productions including the International Theater Amsterdam, Maas Theatre and Dance and Ro Theater. With Davy Pieters she is in Kobe which is a duo of makers, developing performances and documentaries for many different contexts.
Her solo performances Songs for no one and This is not a dance start with documentary research, followed by studying form. This results in a visual and physical performance where theatre, mime and dance meet. Her stories have universal meaning, partly because of their abstract form. This is emphasized by the fact that her performances are widely acclaimed both in the Netherlands and abroad. For example, she received the BNG Bank Theatre Award twice (both in 2020 and 2021) and her work was shown at Theater Festival Flanders, Theater der Welt and in other theatres from Porto to Tokyo.
Nastaran is currently doing research for her new performance as a volunteer in a hospice. Her preliminary research question is: "Can we make a performance with those who will soon not be here anymore?”
