The Power of Fire: The Unyielding Energy of Women in Fouad Boussouf’s Fêu

For the international performance festival Feeling Curious? art historian Cathelijne Blok interviewed renowned choreographer Fouad Boussouf to delve deeper into his latest work, Fêu. This performance, which premieres on September 25 during the opening of Feeling Curious?, captures the elemental force of fire and transforms it into a radiant choreography. In Fêu, ten women, driven by inner energy, immerse themselves in a hypnotic and radiant dance. As equal partners without a leader, they form a circle without beginning or end—the center, unoccupied, sparks our imagination.

The circle in the work is a powerful symbol in many cultures. In Fêu, the dancers form a constantly moving circle, embodying both the geometric perfection and the organic, spontaneous energy of fire. This formation creates a movement where each dancer’s individuality is preserved while they contribute to the collective rhythm.

Through their constant movement, the dancers cover more than 6km during the performance. This physical exertion ensures that their bodies are honest and sincere. Although the choreography in the work is precise and structured, there is always room for the dancers to express their emotions. Boussouf prefers a tired, sincere body over a technically perfect but emotionally distant one. This approach makes the performance raw and human, making it more engaging and impactful for the audience.

With dancers from different cultures, of various levels, and with diverse stories, the work reflects a broad group of women. This diversity is a central message of Fêu, especially in the current socio-political climate. It shows that we can live harmoniously together and contribute to a richer, more vibrant world.

Boussouf's inspiration for Fêu is rooted in personal memories. It is a tribute to his mother and all other mother figures. The work reflects his childhood memories, surrounded by strong, caring women. As a child, he saw his mother and other women in his family constantly busy in the house, especially in the kitchen, the heart of their home. This constant activity, like insects around a light, inspired the endless dance in Fêu. The fire in their kitchen was both vital and protective, a source of warmth and nourishment, similar to the role of women in the household and community.

After Näss, characterized by primal energy with an all-male ensemble, Boussouf wanted to explore a new direction. A conversation with one of his female dancers inspired him to explore a similar concept with women. This led to Fêu, where female energy and collective strength take center stage.

Boussouf’s work is also influenced by his cultural heritage. Born in Morocco, he draws inspiration from the geometric patterns and shapes prevalent in Moroccan art and architecture. These forms, devoid of human figures due to cultural and religious reasons, provide a rich source of visual and conceptual inspiration for his choreography.

With Fêu, Fouad Boussouf has created a performance that transcends the stage. It is a celebration of the strength and resilience of women, a tribute to the warmth of fire, and a powerful message of unity and diversity. As the dancers move in their endless circle, they embody the unyielding energy that drives us all, inviting the audience to partake in their radiant dance.
