In de voorstelling Perzen speelt en danst Marah Haj Hussein mee. Op 22 en 23 april 2025 staat ze in The Kitchen van Theater Rotterdam met haar eigen voorstelling Language: no broblem, waar ze verkent hoe talen ons denken en begrip van grenzen en ontheemding vormen.
Confronting Western Cultural Heritage with the Reality of a Multivocal World
Perzen. Triomf van Empathie (Persians. Triumph of Empathy) is a remarkable theater production directed by Chokri Ben Chikha. In this performance, he collaborates with six performers to explore how greater understanding and empathy can be shown in a decades-long conflict: the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. They do so by examining one of the oldest plays in history, The Persians by Greek playwright Aeschylus.
This play recounts a war between the Greeks and the Persians, a conflict in which Aeschylus himself fought. The central question is: Did Aeschylus demonstrate empathy and understanding for his enemy, or was his primary goal to showcase Greek superiority? By posing these questions, the performers draw connections between this ancient story and the current genocide in the Middle East.
The performance, based on interviews conducted by Ben Chikha in Israel and Palestine in January 2024, combines words, dance, and music into a dynamic and moving whole. Perzen. Triomf van Empathie balances art and reality, opportunism and empathy.
"Chokri Ben Chikha and Action Zoo Humain bring the Israeli and Palestinian perspectives together to mourn, speak, play, and dance in Persians. Triumph of Empathy. 'The greatest challenge' they have 'ever undertaken' became a necessary and deliberate punch to the gut."
