PEARLS isn't just about the past; it's about imagining a better future. 

Joshua Serafin leads PEARLS, a journey exploring pre-colonial Philippine identities through dance, song, and theater, along with fellow artists Lukresia Quismundo and Bunny Cadag. Their mission goes beyond just putting on a show; it's a way to honor a time when people saw gender as fluid, like a flowing river. Inspired by these stories, they want to discuss gender in a new way, breaking free from old ideas. 

PEARLS isn't just about the past; it's about imagining a better future. They see the Philippines as a symbol of strength and beauty, and their performance is meant to heal. Through their own stories as non-binary people, they turn pain into something beautiful, like how a pearl forms from a grain of sand. It's a journey of discovery and acceptance, inviting everyone to dream of a world where everyone is valued.  
 
In 2022 we presented the performance MISS of Serafin at Feeling Curious? Festival.During Welcome to our Guesthouse 2023 (the artist-in-residence program of Productiehuis Theater Rotterdam) Joshua Serafin performed VOID and did research for PEARLS. Serafin has been chosen to showcase their work VOID at the prestigious Biennale of Venice.

PEARLS is the final chapter of Cosmological Gangbang, a project where Serafin envisioned a new cosmology with three distinct goddesses emerging from unique portals. These portals lead to diverse realms where these goddesses dwell, creating, balancing, and ending life.   
 

Bio

Joshua Serafin is a multidisciplinary artist from the Philippines who combines dance, performance, visual arts, and choreography, while currently residing in Brussels. Serafin graduated from the Philippine High School for the Arts in Theatre Arts and furthered their studies at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, majoring in Contemporary Dance. They recently graduated from P.A.R.T.S. and are currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in Visual Arts at KASK School of the Arts in Ghent.   

Their work raises questions about identity, transmigration, queer politics and representation, different states of being, and the ways in which one can inhabit a body. In 2024, Serafin has been invited to participate in the 60th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia.

The performance is mostly performative with a bit of English spoken text. There won't be any surtitles availible. 

PEARLS gaat niet alleen over het verleden; het gaat over het verbeelden van een betere toekomst. 

 Joshua Serafin brengt PEARLS, een reis die pre-koloniale Filipijnse identiteiten verkent door middel van dans, zang en theater, samen met medekunstenaars Lukresia Quismundo en Bunny Cadag. Hun missie gaat verder dan alleen een voorstelling; het is een manier om een tijd te eren waarin mensen gender als vloeiend zagen, zoals een stromende rivier. Geïnspireerd door deze verhalen willen ze gender op een nieuwe manier bespreken, losbrekend van oude ideeën.

PEARLS gaat niet alleen over het verleden; het gaat om het verbeelden van een betere toekomst. Ze zien de Filipijnen als een symbool van kracht en schoonheid, en hun performance is bedoeld om te helen. Door hun eigen verhalen als non-binaire mensen, veranderen ze pijn in iets moois, zoals hoe een parel ontstaat uit een zandkorrel. Het is een reis van ontdekking en acceptatie, waarbij iedereen wordt uitgenodigd om te dromen van een wereld waarin iedereen wordt gewaardeerd.

In 2022 presenteerden we de performance MISS van Serafin tijdens het Feeling Curious? Festival. Tijdens Welcome to our Guesthouse 2023 (het artist-in-residence programma van Productiehuis Theater Rotterdam) voerde Joshua Serafin VOID uit en deed onderzoek voor PEARLS. Serafin is geselecteerd om hun werk VOID te tonen op de prestigieuze Biënnale van Venetië.

PEARLS is het laatste hoofdstuk van Cosmological Gangbang, een project waarin Serafin een nieuwe kosmologie voorstelde met drie verschillende godinnen die uit unieke portalen tevoorschijn komen. Deze portalen leiden naar diverse rijken waar deze godinnen wonen, leven creëren, balanceren en beëindigen.

Bio
Joshua Serafin is een multidisciplinaire kunstenaar uit de Filippijnen die dans, performance, beeldende kunst en choreografie combineert, en momenteel in Brussel woont. Serafin is afgestudeerd aan de Philippine High School for the Arts in Theaterkunsten en heeft verder gestudeerd aan de Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, met als hoofdvak hedendaagse dans. Ze zijn recent afgestudeerd aan P.A.R.T.S. en volgen momenteel een Master of Fine Arts in Beeldende Kunst aan de KASK School of Arts in Gent.

Hun werk roept vragen op over identiteit, transmigratie, queer politiek en representatie, verschillende toestanden van zijn, en de manieren waarop iemand een lichaam kan bewonen. In 2024 is Serafin uitgenodigd om deel te nemen aan de 60e Internationale Kunsttentoonstelling van La Biennale di Venezia.
