Art is not only visible in our halls but also outside, on the steps, in the lobby, and on the square; art is everywhere here. As an interdisciplinary house, we not only provide space for performing arts but also bring various disciplines together in our lobby for encounters between worlds and works.

During the free expo program TRaces, we invite Rotterdam artists, from emerging to established, to use our building as a stage for ongoing exhibitions of interdisciplinary work that connect with the city of Rotterdam and its residents. The lobby is the exhibition space where these invited Rotterdam artists leave their mark! Is Theater Rotterdam open? Then you can always drop in during the expo period. For the Feeling Curious?-edition of TRaces we welcome Linhuei Chen.

Linhuei Chen (b. 1981) is a Taiwanese Dutch artist based in Rotterdam. Her work  investigates how migration impacts transcultural individuals’ notions of home and cultural hybridity within the discourse of transculturalism influenced by contemporary migration and diaspora. She explores this topic through personal experiences and collective memory/ideas on migration, Dutch colonisation in Taiwan and cultural hybridity, providing perspectives between East Asia and Europe. 
 
Chen uses painting as the primary medium to express her personal experiences and collective ideas based on social research and participatory workshops. She often combines paintings with drawings, objects or installations for diverse viewing experiences. Chen graduated from the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague in 2019 and holds Master’s degrees in Engineering and Law from Taiwan and various European countries. Her artworks are part of the Fenix Museum of Migration and Lam Museum collections. During the festival she’ll show her work: Third Space 
 
Third Space is the concept developed by Homi Bhabha to describe the hybrid cultural identity which emerges from the interweaving elements of different cultures. Bhabha posits hybridity as a liminal or in-between space, where the ‘cutting edge of translation and negotiations’ occurs (Bhabha 1996). During the process of this artistic research, she realized that all the segments in my works are a journey in the third-space, where her native culture and memories meet with her experience of Western culture. They collide and merge with each other, while she examines with a magnifying glass the Western culture with one hand and examines her past with a monocular with my other hand. She navigates in this space to find answers to questions of who she is and where is home to which she could return?

Kunst is niet alleen zichtbaar in onze zalen, maar ook buiten, op de trappen, in de hal en op het plein; kunst is hier overal. Als interdisciplinair huis bieden we niet alleen ruimte aan podiumkunsten, maar brengen we ook verschillende disciplines samen in onze hal voor ontmoetingen tussen werelden en werken.


Tijdens het gratis expo-programma TRaces nodigen we Rotterdamse kunstenaars, van opkomend tot gevestigd, uit om ons gebouw te gebruiken als podium voor doorlopende tentoonstellingen van interdisciplinair werk dat verbinding maakt met de stad Rotterdam en haar inwoners. De hal is de tentoonstellingsruimte waar deze uitgenodigde Rotterdamse kunstenaars hun sporen achterlaten! Is Theater Rotterdam open? Dan kun je altijd binnenlopen tijdens de expo-periode. Voor de Feeling Curious?-editie van TRaces verwelkomen we Linhuei Chen.

Linhuei Chen (geb. 1981) is een Taiwanees-Nederlandse kunstenaar gevestigd in Rotterdam. Haar werk onderzoekt hoe migratie de opvattingen van transculturele individuen over thuis en culturele hybriditeit beïnvloedt binnen de discussie over transculturalisme, beïnvloed door hedendaagse migratie en diaspora. Ze verkent dit onderwerp door persoonlijke ervaringen en collectieve herinneringen/ideeën over migratie, Nederlandse kolonisatie in Taiwan en culturele hybriditeit, en biedt perspectieven tussen Oost-Azië en Europa.

Chen gebruikt schilderen als het primaire medium om haar persoonlijke ervaringen en collectieve ideeën op basis van sociaal onderzoek en participatieve workshops uit te drukken. Ze combineert vaak schilderijen met tekeningen, objecten of installaties voor diverse kijkervaringen. Chen studeerde in 2019 af aan de Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in Den Haag en heeft masterdiploma's in Techniek en Rechten uit Taiwan en verschillende Europese landen. Haar kunstwerken maken deel uit van de collecties van het Fenix Museum of Migration en het Lam Museum. Tijdens het festival toont ze haar werk: Third Space.

Third Space is het concept ontwikkeld door Homi Bhabha om de hybride culturele identiteit te beschrijven die ontstaat door de verstrengeling van elementen uit verschillende culturen. Bhabha stelt hybriditeit voor als een liminale of tussentijdse ruimte, waar de 'snijrand van vertaling en onderhandelingen' plaatsvindt (Bhabha 1996). Tijdens het proces van dit artistieke onderzoek realiseerde ze zich dat alle segmenten in haar werken een reis zijn in de derde ruimte, waar haar eigen cultuur en herinneringen samenkomen met haar ervaring van de westerse cultuur. Ze botsen en versmelten met elkaar, terwijl ze met een vergrootglas de westerse cultuur onderzoekt met de ene hand en haar verleden bekijkt met een verrekijker in haar andere hand. Ze navigeert in deze ruimte om antwoorden te vinden op de vragen wie ze is en waar het thuis is waarnaar ze zou kunnen terugkeren.
