Decolonizing the Theatre Space is een verdiepende bijeenkomst over dekolonisatie in de theatersector, met een focus op leiderschap. Uitgangspunt is het boek Decolonizing the Theatre Space: A Conversation van Simeilia Hodge-Dallaway, waarin institutionele barrières, alternatieve bronnen en nieuwe werkwijzen centraal staan.

Dit programma richt zich op het openbreken van bestaande structuren en het creëren van ruimte voor methodes en theorieën uit verschillende (sub)culturen. Samen met Hodge-Dallaway en Nederlandse theaterprofessionals onderzoeken we hoe leiderschap kan bijdragen aan een radicale herdefiniëring van het theaterveld. Het programma combineert dialoog, reflectie en artistieke expressie, met een panelgesprek, interactieve publieksbijdrage en een dansperformance.

Sprekers / panelleden

Simeilia Hodge-Dallaway is een bekroond leider in de kunsten die werkt in het VK en de VS. Ze is de oprichter en CEO van Beyond The Canon, medeoprichter van Black Lives Black Words International Project en voormalig oprichter-CEO van Artistic Directors of the Future. Simeilia heeft verschillende leiderschapsinitiatieven ontworpen, waarvan de meest gevierde Up Next is: een initiatief voor leiderschapswissel in samenwerking met Bush Theater en Battersea Arts Centre, en het met de Stage Innovation Award bekroonde initiatief, ADF Board Shadowing Programme. 

Ook is Simeilia een geprezen auteur, verantwoordelijk voor de boemlezingen The Oberon Book of Monologues for Black Actors: Classical and Contemporary Speeches from Black British Plays en Audition Speeches for Black, South Asian and Middle Eastern Actors. Simeilia's recentste publicaties zijn Decolonizing the Theater Space. A Conversation, samen met Kwame Kwei-Armah en Olivia Poglio-Nwabal, en Beyond The Canon's Plays for Young Activists, samen met Sarudzayi Marufu. Momenteel werkt ze aan een nieuw boek over dans, samen met Freddie Opoku-Addaie. 

Freddie Opoku-Addaie is artistiek directeur van het internationale dansfestival Dance Umbrella in London. Daarvoor cureerde hij  als gastprogrammeur 'Out of the System', een platform voor innovatief talent uit het VK en daarbuiten. Met meer dan 20 jaar ervaring als onafhankelijk artiest, trad hij op en tourde hij met zowel zijn eigen werk als met werk van bekende gezelschappen in het VK en internationaal. Freddie is geboren en getogen in de multiculturele samenleving van Oost-Londen en Ghana, en werkt aan projecten met een brede verscheidenheid aan omvang, budget, organisaties en instellingen. Een voorbeeld hiervan is SystemsLAB (2016), dat hij oprichtte om de diversiteit aan levenservaringen in de 21e eeuw te tonen. 

Judi Mesman is hoogleraar aan de Universiteit Leiden en Universiteitshoogleraar Maatschappelijke verantwoordelijkheid en impact. In 2024 publiceerde zij haar onderzoek Leiderschap in kleur, waarvoor zij 40 mensen van kleur sprak in leiderschapsposities in de (semi-)publieke sector, zoals in de (lokale) overheid, cultuur, onderwijs en zorg.  

Dalton Jansen is choreograaf, oprichter van dansgezelschap BlackBirds en een van de makers binnen de makerscommunity van Theater Rotterdam.

Dolores Leeuwin is verbinder, sparringpartner, (dag)voorzitter, actrice en presentatrice.

Decolonizing the Theatre Space is an in-depth gathering on theatre decolonization, with a focus on leadership. The starting point is Decolonizing the Theatre Space: A Conversation by Simeilia Hodge-Dallaway, which highlights institutional barriers, alternative sources, and new working methods. 

This program is about breaking open existing structures and creating space for methods and theories from different (sub)cultures. Together with Hodge-Dallaway and Dutch theatre professionals, we will explore how leadership can contribute to a radical redefinition of the theatre landscape. The program blends dialogue, reflection, and artistic expression, featuring a panel discussion, interactive audience engagement, and a dance performance.

Speakers / Panelists

Simeilia Hodge-Dallaway is an award-winning arts leader working across the UK and America. She is the founder and CEO at Beyond The Canon, and the former Co-founder at Black Lives Black Words International Project and the former founding CEO at Artistic Directors of the Future. Throughout Simeilia’s career in the arts, she has designed several critically acclaimed leadership initiatives, most celebrated for Up Next: a leadership takeover initiative in partnership with Bush Theatre and Battersea Arts Centre, and The Stage Innovation Award-winning initiative, ADF Board Shadowing Programme. 

In addition, Simeilia is a critically acclaimed author, responsible for the monologue anthologies The Oberon Book of Monologues for Black Actors: Classical and Contemporary Speeches from Black British Plays and Audition Speeches for Black, South Asian and Middle Eastern Actors. Simeilia’s latest publications include Decolonizing the Theatre Space. A Conversation co-edited with Kwame Kwei-Armah and Olivia Poglio-Nwabal, and Beyond The Canon’s Plays for Young Activists, co-edited with Sarudzayi Marufu. Currently she is working on a new book on dance, together with Freddie Opoku-Addaie.

Freddie Opoku-Addaie is Artistic Director and co-Chief Executive of Dance Umbrella London's International Dance Festival. Before which, as Guest Programmer, he curated ‘Out of the System’, a platform for innovative established and emerging talent from the UK and beyond.

With over 20 years’ experience as an independent artist, he performed and toured both his own work and work with well-known companies both across the UK and internationally. Born and raised in the midst of East London’s multiculturalist society as well as Ghana, working on projects of the widest variety of size, budget, organisations and institutions fuels his artistic cultural equity practices. This is exemplified by SystemsLAB (2016), which he founded to address the diversity of lived experience in the 21st century.

Dalton Jansen is a choreographer, founder of his dance company BlackBirds and one of the makers within the makers community of Theater Rotterdam. 

Judi Mesman is a professor at Leiden University and University Professor of Social Responsibility and Impact. In 2024 she published her research Leadership in Color, for which she spoke to 40 people of color in leadership positions in the (semi-)public sector, such as in (local) government, culture, education and healthcare.
