Gek genoeg vielen daar maar weinig vrouwelijke componisten onder. Maar luister naar het werk van Kassia uit Constantinopel, Hildegard von Bingen, Barbara Strozzi, Clara Schumann of Ethel Smyth en je vraagt je af waarom.
Counting Stars With You geeft letterlijk een stem aan de vrouwen uit dat verborgen gebleven verleden. Le Pladecs performers spelen intussen een fysiek spel met de denkkaders in deze composities en de verlangens die erin worden verklankt. Zo maken ze ruimte voor een vrouwelijke toekomst van de muziek.
De Franse choreograaf Maud Le Pladec heeft altijd al een speciale interesse in muziek en het muzikale lichaam gehad. Voor dit werk creëert ze een lichaamstaal die draait om de stem, adem, zang en geluid. Dat verleidt de performers tot nieuwe manieren van spelen en verbinding te maken met hun materiaal. Ze openen hun mond en laten de muziek stromen. Zo gaan ze in dialoog met het werk van deze componisten.
Na haar afstuderen aan het Centre Choréographique Nationale de Montpellier danste Maud Le Pladec onder meer bij Mathilde Monnier, Mette Ingvartsen en Boris Charmatz. In 2010 ging haar eerste eigen creatie in première, Professor, waarmee ze in eigen land direct een aanmoedigingsprijs won. Sinds 2017 geeft ze leiding aan het Centre Choréographique Nationale d’Orléans.
Le Pladec deed met een beurs van het Institut Français in New York onderzoek naar post-minimalistische muziek, en werkte sindsdien regelmatig samen met het Brusselse Ictus Ensemble. Een terugkerend aspect van haar werk is haar inzet om vrouwen een stem te geven.

The musical canon features only a handful of female composers. Why is that? With their voices, breath and bodies the performers complement music history by adding the female perspective.
In Counting Stars With You, the dancers are singing and the singers are dancing. Maud Le Pladec is rewriting music history with them, which for centuries has revolved around ‘big names’ and ‘heritage’. Strikingly, this included only a handful of female composers. But listen to the works of Cassia of Constantinople, Hildegard von Bingen, Barbara Strozzi, Clara Schumann or Ethel Smyth, and you’ll wonder why that is.
Counting Stars With You literally gives a voice to the women from this overlooked past. As they do so, Le Pladec’s performers play a physical game with the mental frameworks underpinning the compositions and the desires they articulate. They blaze a trail for a female future in music.
The French choreographer Maud Le Pladec has always had a special interest in music and the musical body. For this work, she is creating a physical language that centres on the voice, breath, vocals and sound, enticing her performers to find new modes of performing and connecting to their material. They open their mouths and let the music flow, opening a dialogue with the work of these composers.
After graduating from the Centre Choréographique Nationale de Montpellier, Maud Le Pladec danced with the likes of Mathilde Monnier, Mette Ingvartsen and Boris Charmatz. In 2010 she premiered her first creation, Professor, which immediately won her an incentive award in her native country. Since 2017 Le Pladec has been running the Centre Choréographique Nationale d’Orléans.
Le Pladec received a scholarship from the Institut Français to study post-minimalist music in New York, and since then has worked with the Brussels-based Ictus Ensemble on a regular basis. A recurring element in her work is an active drive to offer women a voice.
